KAYA
in mauritius, KAYA is a name spoken with the same reverence as Fela Kuti or Bob Marley. born joseph réginald topize, he created seggae, a powerful fusion of the militant soul of jamaican roots reggae with the spiritual, triple-beat rhythm of séga. with racinetatane he gave a voice to the creole community and the working class, singing in kreol about identity, unity and resistance. his death in police custody in february 1999 shook the nation. more than two decades on, KAYA's songs, and the seggae he invented, still carry across the island and the diaspora.
